The Dance sessions of
Artsweek were led by 'Rubba' with a team of African dancers and drummers and our
dancer-in-residence, Godiva Marshall. As well as teaching the dances, Rubba gave
educational talks on the culture surrounding the dances and the rôle of dance and
drumming in traditional African life.
Dancers and drummers work together, the language of the drum
controlling the dancer, who listens and responds.
A different African dance was taught each day and each dance had
its own meaning and function. Dance in Africa is not merely for entertainment; it has a
function and performs a rôle.
The students worked throughout the day in three large groups in
separate places, coming together at the end of each day to share their work in
performance.
