A Level Film Studies

Film Studies is designed to deepen your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film. You will study film as a medium, an art form and as a social and economic institution, and will engage with a wide range of different kinds of films. The course will develop skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection.

Alongside written and analytical work students will undertake practical work, developing their own original film ideas in the form of storyboards, screenplays, step-outlines and films. 
Students can also get involved in practical filmmaking by opting to become a member of Theale Good Inc.  a sixth form production company who are commissioned to make films for both inside and outside school.  Inside school the students film and document events such as house evenings, drama performances and sports day.  Outside school they have been commissioned by organisations such as the Royal Berkshire Show to create a promotional film and West Berkshire LEA to produce educational DVDs.  The students also run a lunchtime film production group for years 7, 8 and 9: The Young Directors Guild.

A Level students also have the opportunity to belong to Cineclub – The Network for Young Filmmakers.

BTEC Media Studies

The media plays an increasingly important role in society today – influencing the lives of students, everyday.  When studying for a BTEC First Certificate in Media Studies , students will learn creative and analytical skills. Thus, Media studies will help studies in other subject areas with key links with art, photography, ICT, music and English.

The BTEC First Certificate in Media at level 2 is a course that is the equivalent of 2 GCSES grade A* - C.  Students will learn about the media through creative work and practical production of a variety of media texts.  For example in the video production unit students will storyboard, script, shoot and edit their own film.  In the advertising unit students will create their own advertising campaign
