WIDE READING COURSEWORK
In order to broaden your understanding and enjoyment of English Literature and language you will get to read a selection of short stories. Your individual teacher will tell you which stories you will be reading and will guide you through the intricacies of language and plot. Some teachers will choose a story which you will compare with the set text
You will learn to analyse and appreciate the stories and will be asked to compare a specific theme, character or language style within the texts which you study.
'Sherlock Holmes' stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are a popular choice.
Choices, however, are broad and can incorporate authors of the canon from both before and after 1914. These can include:
Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen, Roald Dahl, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Gaskell, E M Forster, WIlliam Golding, H G Wells, D H Lawrence, James Joyce and Aldous Huxley
