MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT KEY STAGE 4 - GCSE SCHEME OF WORK Foundation Intermediate Higher GCSE Scheme of Work The majority of pupils follow the SEG GCSE Syllabus 2510T, with centre assessed coursework. The Mathematics GCSE is compiled as follows: 1 Non-Calculator Paper - 40% 1 Calculator Paper - 40% Coursework - 20% The present year 10 is divided into 9 ability sets. Sets 1 and 2 follow the Higher tier, sets 3, 4,5 and 6 follow the Intermediate tier and sets 7 and 8 the Foundation tier. The lowest set, set 9, follows the SMP Graduated Assessment course and should achieve a GCSE grade in Mathematics at the end of their course. The SEG MATHEMATICS Syllabus provides the AIMS and the ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES, together with the subject content appropriate for each tier of entry.
The tier of entry for each set are for guidance only and the decision about level of entry of each set, and each pupil, is made towards the end of the first term of year 11. This will vary from year to year depending on the mathematical ability of each year group. The SEG Syllabus has been divided into five sections, one for each of the five terms in Key Stage 4. Pupils will carry out preparation and completion of pieces of coursework throughout the course; therefore the scheme of work has been designed to ‘tie-in’ with this. Mathematics Lessons at Key Stage 4 It is expected that teachers will take the scheme of work as their long-term plan, and from this develop their medium term and short term plans specific to their sets ability. Every lesson in Key Stage 4 should consist of:
It is assumed that non-calculator strategies and mental arithmetic skills will be reinforced and developed throughout the course. The following topic should be revised frequently through mental arithmetic tests or quick-fire warm-up questions: Four Rules of Number Fraction of a quantity Time and Money Metric and Imperial Measures Averages Names and Properties of Shapes
Assessment The Scheme of Work is a guide, with the SEG GCSE Syllabus providing the specific assessment objectives. There will be three formal written assessments in Key Stage 4. YEAR 10
The completion of Coursework is outlined in the Coursework Booklet, and it outlines that during each term of Key Stage 4, pupils will either complete a ‘taster’ piece or a piece to be eventually submitted. A task is not given for term 5, since pupils will use this time as an opportunity to finely tune previous pieces. The Coursework component is 20% of the GCSE, and must consist of at least two tasks. Resources All pupils in Key Stage 4 will have access to a ‘Mathematics for SEG GCSE’ book; in addition to this, class sets of the MSM books can be used. The text books for each set are:
Each group will have a class set of the SEG GCSE books which will used during lesson time; homeworks should be resourced from worksheets, MSM books and the CGP workbooks which every pupil will have in year 11.
