German Exchange trip to Augsburg, Bavaria - July 2009

On Friday 3rd July 10 year 9 and 10 Theale students joined up with 10 Denefield pupils for the return leg of this year’s German Exchange with the St Anna Gymnasium in Augsburg. We were all looking forward to seeing our German partners again, who visited us here in Reading in April. We had canoed on the Thames, gone bowling and partied together, and the Germans had visited London, Bath and Cambridge, as well as taking part in lessons at both Theale and Denefield. What lay in store for us in Germany?

The trip got off to a “swinging “ start on the Saturday morning at “Robin’s Wood”, a rope-climbing centre in the Scherneck Forest, where German and English students clambered and soared from tree to tree on rope ladders, swinging rope bridges, “flying foxes”-even a skateboard on a wire about 10 meters above the ground!  As well as time spent in school, taking part in a variety of lessons, including English and sport, we fitted in trips  to the centre of Augsburg, Munich, mad King Ludwig’s Castle Linderhof and  Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The weather was varied…we had beautiful views from the cable car in Garmisch, and on our walk back down the mountain, and through the spectacular “Partnach-Klamm” gorge, but our views of Munich on our climb on the Olympic Stadium roof were slightly limited by the dark grey clouds which then drenched us thoroughly! It was warm enough to enjoy swimming outdoors, and rowing on the town moat…though the last few to get off the water got caught by the rain there too! As well as the day to day challenges of understanding and speaking some German, some people set themselves the extra task of understanding Ice Age 3 in German! After a musical and sporty farewell party, when many of the German host parents told Mrs Hull how wonderful the Theale students were, and a final day with families, there were some tearful farewells, and promises to keep in touch, rounding off another successful and very enjoyable German exchange.
