COMMUNICATIONS FACULTY

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Another busy year is coming to a close and preparations for the next school year are at 'full steam'. We are hoping that the building work that is happening at present will be complete and all the English staff are looking forward to moving into the new refurbished classrooms in September. Pupils are now busy producing display work which will put the finishing touches to the rooms when we move into them!

This year has seen a number of successful theatre visits and visiting groups in school, the most recent being an upper school trip to the Hexagon to see a performance of The Complete Works of Shakespeare - abridged, of course! The rapid and often comic run through the plays of Shakespeare was enjoyed by all. Thank-you to all the staff and pupils who have participated in these activities. Two theatre trips for next year are already being planned: 'Twelfth Night' for year nine and 'The Banshee.' Letters will be coming out about these trips in September.

The launch of the national Literacy Strategy is keeping English teachers very busy at present. This government initiative is putting a focus on developing further the literacy skills of students in years 7-9 and introducing some of the ideas that have been established in primary school during the last few years in the Literacy Hour. The English Department is adapting our current schemes of work in incorporate the best ideas of this initiative.

Finally, the English department wants to wish farewell to two members of staff who are leaving and welcome three new teachers who will be joining us in September. In September, Mr Fahy, Miss Williams and Miss Beesom will be bringing their youth and enthusiasm to the department.

Sadly though, Mr Holroyd and Miss Flint are leaving the school at the end of the year and the English Department will miss them both. Mr Holroyd was, until last year, the Head of the English Department, having started in the school 17 years ago as a newly qualified teacher. He has put much work into the English department over the years and created the successful department that we now enjoy. Our loss is Denefield School's gain; he will be starting there in September as Deputy Headteacher. Miss Flint is moving to the West Country from where she originates; she has been with the department for five years and contributed greatly to its development. We wish them good luck in the future.
