Trip to Morocco 2002

A year ago our plans for another trip to Nepal were changed following the murder of Nepal's king and queen. For the last year everything has been geared towards a trip in a beautiful part of India called Sikkim and during that time we have had two memorable training weekends including one in Snowdonia. Exactly a year to the day that we heard that tragic news about the royal family in Nepal, we learned that we would be unable to go ahead with our trip to Sikkim because of the ongoing conflict in Kashmir. Government advice was that British citizens should not go to any part of India and with barely six weeks to go we had to look at other countries around the world for an alternative location. In the end it was Morocco that we chose for a trip that we hope will be even better than the Sikkim trip.

The Moroccan trip will start in the high Atlas mountains with ten days trekking around some of the high peaks and finishing with a climb to the top of Mt Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. We will be travelling through some remote mountainous villages along the way and even occasionally sleeping out on the rooftops to  escape the heat at night. Our trip will take in some of the ancient cities of Morocco such as Marrakesh, Meknes and Fes and include a tour of the more desert-like south. A short camel trek, a visit to some Bedouin tents on the fringes of the Sahara desert and a sunrise view over the sand dunes will be some of the other memorable activities. It should be a fantastic trip. Our final training weekend takes place in the Brecon Beacons. We will be camping out in the wild for two nights from July 5th to the 7th. The group will be carrying all their own food and tents for up to 15 miles each day so it should be a good test of fitness just before we set off for Morocco.
