National Science Week

8th-16th March 2002

The Science Department at Theale Green Community School celebrated national science week with a host of activities aimed at all age groups. First off was a honey bee workshop where students used professional equipment to learn all about these fascinating social insects. Years 7 and 8 investigated a staged robbery using forensic science techniques, including finger printing. Needless to say they caught the criminal red handed!

In a challenge with a seasonal twist, students of all years were invited to raise a cream egg as high off the ground as possible, using only newspaper and selotape. The tallest structure reached over two metres! Mrs Carless, Head of Science, demonstrated the amazing properties of liquid nitrogen to a packed audience. This included a mysterious imploding balloon and a raw egg that was temporarily ‘cooked’ by this very cold liquid. Lower school students made soap bubbles up to a metre wide using a special suds formula and watched a spectacular fire-fighting demonstration.

Many students attended a series of lectures at Imperial College London aimed at young scientists. Girls of all ages participated in cutting edge science on the Women in Science and Engineering bus, which visited  Theale Green during science week. Paul Anderson and George Mason won a competition to create imaginative new scientific theories, whilst Elenor Linton, Dimitri P. and Kayley Barnes designed innovative ways of harnessing ‘animal energy.’
