NEWS FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
This term has been a very busy one for all staff and students within the Music Department.
Coursework deadlines have kept us all very busy.
Congratulations td all students who submitted work, especially this year's GCSE group, many of
whom have shown huge commitment and dedication to their coursework. The standard of work
this year is very high. Years 11,12 and 13 are now on study leave and we wish them the very best
with their exams. A very special goodbye goes to our Year 13 Music students, Sarah-Jane Bee,
Holly Carrington, Tom Ensom, Daniel Hodsdon and David Kirkhope. They have contributed so
much to Music at Theale Green during their time here and will be missed dearly.
Sadly we also have to say goodbye to Mr.Sizeland who is leaving us at half-term to have an
operation. He has been a huge asset to the Department and all staff and students will be sad to
see him go.
British Academy of Music's Young Musician of the Year Award!
A huge congratulations goes to one of our Year 11 Music
students Helen John who recently competed for the British Academy of Music's Young Musician of the Year award and won it! She competed
against 3,000 under 18 year olds performing recitals on the piano, guitar
and voice as well as taking a number of aural and theory tests, scoring very highly in all categories. The panel chose Helen to
be the overall not only because of her great dedication and talent but
also because of her persistence and willingness to help others in need.
Mr.Jenson from the British Academy of Music
HGM told us: We were impressed by Helen's mature attitude to the
competition, the way she took advice and used it to her advantage and her continual smile. She is
a credit to your school . Well done Helen, we are all very proud of you. We
wish Helen the best of luck in her GCSE's and look forward to seeing more of
her perform in the future!
Sponsored Piano Play-in
A piano play-in took place for all our piano students that have lessons with our teacher Vanessa Martin-Adams on Friday 22nd April. All students played their favourite piano pieces for slots lasting 10-30 minutes each. Some students also played duets. The day went really well and students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. In total we managed to raise in excess of £400 which will go towards the Teenage Cancer Trust'. Well done to all the students who took part and a big thank you to Vanessa for organising this event.
Redecoration
The renovation of the MR2 and MRS classrooms and practise rooms has just been completed. Work will continue over the summer to complete MR1. Special thanks goes to the caretakers for their very hard work on these rooms, they have done a really good job. Also, a big thank you to Mr.Battrick in the Art Department who made some musical stencils to brighten up the practise rooms. They look great.
Mr.Lester
STUDY SUPPORT
Many thanks to the students and staff who have attended a series of Saturday Study Support sessions
designed to prepare students for Year 9 SATS and for GCSEs in Maths, English, Science and Technology.
All agreed that these were very worthwhile and have helped to prepare the students for these major
assessments.
