Bronze, Saver and Gold for Maths Challengers

Pupils at Theale Green Community School recently entered the UK IntermediateMathematical Challenge with some really excellent results. Out of over 137,000 entries from year 10 and 11 pupils nationwide, there were particularly outstanding performances from eight Theale Green School year 10 pupils. Richard Husbands achieved a silver award, and Tom Penley achieved a gold award for his performance, which was the best in the school and in the top 6 % of the whole country.

The following pupils achieved bronze certificates Simon Barras, Pru Bamberger, Lucy Rice, Gareth Thomas, Graham Hargreaves and Craig Nesbitt.

On May 1st pupils from year 8 will be entering the UK Junior Mathematical Challenge. It is hoped that their work with the National Numeracy Strategy will boost their performance. The Maths department at Theale Green Community School successfully launched the Numeracy Strategy in September 2000, with some excellent developments; pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 are benefiting from and enjoying interactive lessons, which focus on mental maths.

National Numeracy Strategy

By Miss Richards

The Government launched the National Numeracy Strategy in schools with primary-age pupils in September 1999. All pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2 have been taught a daily Mathematics lesson, with a high concentration on mental and oral work.

Since September 2000 the National Numeracy Strategy has been introduced and developed at Theale Green Community School. The staff in the Mathematics department and throughout the school have received Numeracy training,

to become familiar with the main aspects of the strategy and the different types of mental written calculation skills. Pupils in Key Stage 3 are making good progress in more interactive lessons, which emphasise Numeracy skills, and we hope to see even further progress next year with the introduction of new strategies within the department and across the curriculum.

The Mathematics department agrees that the National Numeracy Strategy is having a positive effect on all of Key Stages 3 and 4, and it is hoped that the improvement in pupils' Numeracy skills will benefit their work in other subjects. We hope that staff, pupils, parents and the community will take an active interest.
