This
spring term has been a very busy one, hampered greatly by the constant
rain. Many fixtures have had to be re-arranged, causing a backlog of
fixtures having to be squeezed into the end of term. Success on the
football field in the cup also means that we will have to play into the
summer term.
It has been a very successful term for the children, with the senior boys' trampoline team winning through to the national finals for the third year running. This time coming a fantastic seventh in the country. The year 7's continue to be our most successful year. The girls netball team came second in the Reading league, missing out by just one point, while the girls hockey team have not lost a game this year. The boys cross country team won the area for the first time, while the football team continues to be successful in the county cup. Even greater success has been achieved by the rugby team. They have now won through the area and the district rounds of the national cup and now represent the Southern area in the National finals to be held in Staines in May. The winners of this will go on to play at Twickenham. Next term we will be changing to summer sports of athletics, tennis, cricket and rounders in lessons. Swimming will begin after half term. The number of pupils forgetting to bring their full kit to lessons is beginning to be a problem in certain lessons. Could parents please make sure that all kit is bought and organised in readiness for the summer? Pupils failing to bring the correct kit to lessons will be issued with a detention unless they have a letter from home excusing them from taking part. The correct kit is printed in the pupils' homework diaries. YEAR 7 NETBALL REPORT There is a wealth of talent in year seven making team selection very difficult. Many schools only field one team making it difficult for us when we could, for the first time in years, have fielded three! Over twenty girls regularly attended training on Monday evenings and their skills have improved over the years. We won all our friendly matches convincingly and later in the season entered the Reading League organised very efficiently by Reading District Netball Association. Twelve teams entered this league and we met a variety of opponents and after eight Thursday evenings of matches we emerged as runners-up. This was a fantastic achievement and one to be proud of. Bethany Beake is to be congratulated on being selected for the development squad in Berks. and she enjoyed a season of high level coaching. Seven girls have been entered for the Newbury U13 trials to select a Thames Valley team. Several should be successful. Several players deserve a mention for their commitment to training and their achievement over the season. Lisa Doole for her infectious enthusiasm and talent as a most determined centre. Sophie Bieny and Bethany Beake for their work as shooters .Charlie Huntley and Claire Francis for their skilful play as WA and WD. In defence we rotated the formidable trio of Kayley Barns, Helen Mc Louchlan and Lauren George. These girls were supported by other very strong players in the squad. They are all to be congratulated on a terrific first season, I am looking forward to great things next year. Thank you to Miss Cowell who coached the team in mid-season and to Lisa Doole and Bethany Beake who showed their maturity by coping with the role of team managers during the same period. A great job. Well Done. FOOTBALL When it rains it pours! This has certainly been the case this term, causing havoc to the football season. By now we should have played over sixty fixtures, but instead we have only achieved half this number. As a result, the football pitches will stay up well into the Summer term to catch up on this backlog of fixtures. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions we still have managed to run six different teams, ranging from Year 7 all the way through to our Senior First XI team. Again, I would like to thank Mr. Carter (Year 7) and Mr. Sizer (Year 11 ) who have helped to manage teams this year. Without their dedicated support and commitment these teams would be unable to operate. On the playing side, Year 7 have showed great promise this year. With two fixtures to play they are in a very strong position to win their Reading League. Although tipped to go far in the County Cup competition they unfortunately lost 3-2 to a very strong Maiden Erleigh side in the Quarter Finals. Training sessions for Year 8 have been very successful with large numbers turning up each week. This has lead to a noticeable improvement in results, highlighted by their 5-0 win against Prospect. The Year 9 team has gradually improved over the past 3 years and is now playing some good football. They are now looking to pass the ball along the ground and show much more movement off the ball as well as working hard to put pressure on the opposition. Attacks are now involving 10-15 passes up the field rather than 2 as seen in the past. Players are now working for each other and supporting each movement in greater numbers and getting back behind the ball when not in possession. There is still a lot to be learned, but with more boys joining the squad to help strengthen it there is hope for more success next year. Out of seven games played, we won four and lost three which is a big improvement on last year. Year 10, despite their erratic league form this season, have won through to the final of the District Cup. Expectations will be high as we should be able to field our strongest team including our four district players, which has not been the case so far. Under the leadership of Mr. Sizer AKA Sir Alex Ferguson, the Year 11 team continue to be a very successful team. They have won their Reading League, dispatching competition with relative ease. This form has also continued in the Cup Competitions where they have reached the final of the District Cup and the Semi-Finals of the County Cup. On route in the District competition they beat Hugh Farringdon 3-0, which was a marvelous achievement considering the same team beat them 3-0 in the final last year! Ironically they are due to play the same team in the Semi-Final of the County Cup.
