Joe Allen 8Hb, Chef and Paul Anderson 8Bb Assistant Year 8 won the KS3 heat.

Emma Thompson 11Pc Chef and Charlotte Christie 11Hc Assistant chef year 11 won the KS4 heat.

After both practical and written work was examined, both teams won places in the finals held at Reading College on March 5th with distinguished judges lead by 'Ready Steady Cook' Chef Brian Tumer.

Joe and Paul cooked:

Goats cheese salad

Devilled kidneys

Boulangere potatoes

Kenyan beans

2 courses for 2 total cost £13

Emma and Charlotte cooked a three-course menu for two- total cost £20:

Melon with raspberry sauce

Thai grilled chicken with Thai fragrant rice

Banana Toffee Cream Pie

The students were asked to cook their meal for a celebrity and coincidentally they both chose Jamie Oliver.

Emma says:

"I chose Jamie Oliver because I like the way that he cooks differently to other chefs and the way that he thinks about the whole food industry'

Joe says:

"Jamie inspired me to enter the competition I think he is great'

Both pairs were highly commended in their respective categories and were thrilled to receive Wedgwood china and vouchers as prizes. The students had done outstandingly well to win through a field of 200 entries in the Reading area.

Emma is planning to study Hospitality and Catering at Reading College in September. John intends to keep entering the Young Chef competition until he wins.
