Graduate Teacher Training at Theale Green Community School.

As part of the West Berkshire drive to encourage new teachers into the profession, Theale Green Community School has been employing Graduates to train on the job under the Government's Graduate Teacher Training Programme. This allows Graduates over the age of 24, with the equivalent of a C grade in English and Mathematics GCSE, to train as teachers at Primary or Secondary level. They are expected to meet National Standards for Qualified Teachers and follow a planned Training Programme under the guidance of their mentor. The scheme is intended to be in addition to the normal PGCE route of training and often attracts a different type of person. Mr. Crush has recently been accepted on the programme to train in the area of Food Technology at Theale Green Community School. Mrs. Whitbread, who is promoting the Programme in Theale and in West Berkshire, says she hopes that more people will get to hear of the scheme and will be encouraged to join the profession via this route. A poster campaign is starting which aims to draw peoples' attention to the hot line, which can be contacted for further information. Mr. Crush is enjoying his new venture and said, "The advantage of the scheme is that a salary is paid, which is significantly more than PGCE students receive and has given me the opportunity to enter the teaching profession, which I would not otherwise have been able to do. The experience I have gained will be the same as that of a PGCE student;however, the training allows me more contact with students over a longer period of time and the chance to really get to know my school."

For more information telephone Mrs. C Whitbread on 0118 9308503.
