There are four houses at Theale Green and each one is named after a famous person, with local connections if possible. Piper House was named after John Piper, a famous artist who worked in the area. He produced prints and paintings of the local landscape and its’ buildings. John Piper was put forward by Pat Eastop, then Head of Art & Design; she knew him from the work he had done with her husband, Geoffrey Eastop, a well-known potter.

John Piper’s work has been exhibited in widely in this area including Reading Museum and Henley. Theale Green has a collection of prints donated by John Piper and these can be seen around the school.

Since John Piper was chosen as the inspiration for Piper House, the house has always been associated with the creative side of the school and many of its teachers are art-based. Piper House is GREEN in colour and you will see this theme in Piper office.

If GREEN is the colour it is only logical that the Piper House mascot should be GREEN also…yes,  you guessed it, Piper’s mascot is a beautiful, fluffy, fire breathing, sweet talking and perfectly proportioned DRAGON! His name is SPIKE and looking after Piper House is his game. He may look soft and cuddly, but, if roused, he can be very fierce!
