NEWS AND EVENTSYear 10’s Trip
In the R.E department this year we have again run our annual trip to Regent’s Park Central Mosque in London for year 10 students. Changes in our GCSE syllabus this year meant that the visit has become an even more integral part of the course. Last year was our first year for this trip and we took just over 60% of the year group. This year 100% were given the option to go on the trip and approximately 90% took part. With this increase in numbers, we ran the trip on four separate days. Students involved themselves in the tour of the Mosque by asking many questions and, for the vast majority of the students, it was their first experience of the atmosphere of a functioning place of worship, outside of the Christian tradition. One of the most important aspects of the visit is for the students to see the people coming and going from the Mosque, at prayer, in conversation or studying. This has again been a successful venture and we look forward to its continued success in future years.

Year 7's trip to the Synagogue
For the first time this year we took a group of Year 7 students to visit Reading Synagogue. Approximately 80 students took part in this visit. During the visit the students sat inside the main prayer hall, where the Rabbi explained some things about Jewish history and also about what they could see around them. As the trip came at the end of their study unit on Judaism, they were able to answer his questions with confidence and ask their own questions too. After this talk the students were then split into smaller groups of about 15 each and a member of staff accompanied each group into a second room, where different tables of artefacts were set up for us to look at. Each group was taken round the tables by a member of Reading Hebrew Congregation. This gave all students the opportunity to ask any questions. To finish our visit, we were given a taste of some foods, which were both kosher and familiar to the children, e.g. fruit, cake, bread and a drink. The students were enthusiastic and extremely polite to their hosts throughout their visit. I am sure that Theale Green will be invited back to the synagogue again.
