Theale Green Recreation Centre are currently helping a local sailing champion to prepare for the World Sailing Championships to be held at Hayling Island during July this year.

Daniel Scheiber, aged 14, from Reading is a member of the GB National Youth Squad and was the 2002 National Junior Champion in the 420 class.

He is currently being helped in his fitness preparation for the World Championships by staff at Theale Green.

Centre Manager David Wall said, "Our Centre was approached by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) to see if we could assist Daniel in his preparation for the World Championships. Of course we have been delighted to do so and will do all we can to get him in the best possible shape".

Fitness Manager at the Centre, James Norfolk, himself a top class cyclist who competed at last years Commonwealth Games, is overseeing Daniel’s progress in the Fitness Studio.

"Daniel has worked hard in the gym on a regular basis and his fitness test results have shown improvements in both strength and aerobic fitness. This has undoubtedly helped him to become more competitive in his tough qualifying events for this years World Championships".

"Sailing is a tough sport with events taking place over a number of days. Daniel needs to keep building his fitness over the next few years if he is to achieve his long term aim of competing in the Olympic Games.

We at Theale Green Recreation Centre are really happy to be helping him achieve that goal".

Daniel echoes this, saying "The endurance I’ve built up in the gym with James’s help, was vital in the Youth National Championships which took place over 1 week with 5 hours sailing every day. I would have struggled to qualify without my extra fitness.

I love my sport and my dream is to one day compete in the Olympics - that would be amazing!"
